Ketosis :how many carbs per day?

Ketosis is a metabolic state within the human body. It’s caused by a prolonged fasting period or by eating a high-fat, moderate protein, and low-carbohydrate diet. Ketosis max carbs requires less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. When the body is in a state of ketosis the primary source of energy is fat either from dietary fat or stored fat. When a person avoids consuming glucose or sugar for 10 to 12 hours then the body will start to make ketones. It may take weeks to start making the machinery to break down these ketones.

The metabolic state is generally not achieved when consuming a typical Western diet or standard American diet. It relies primarily on carbohydrates as the fuel source.

Benefit of keto diet

Keto diet:

The keto diet is a type of low-carb diet that focuses on the body being in a state of ketosis. Usually, the body metabolizes glucose or sugar to keep the body running. Glucose is a simple sugar that the body gets in foods rich in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, and potatoes. All of the carbohydrates body consumes are then converted into glucose.

When the body is in a state of ketosis then it significantly reduces carb intake and consumes more fat. So, the body will use the stored glucose in the liver. Because the liver organ can also produce ketone bodies at a faster rate. Ketones molecules come from both body fat and the fat consumed in foods. When the body needs more energy these ketones go into the bloodstream to help the body function in the same way the glucose did.

Why ketosis is important?

A person can reach a state of ketosis through fasting or physically intensive exercises but only through following a keto diet. So, it is good for the body to be in ketosis, and under ketosis, the body provides many health benefits. Benefit of low carb high fat diet may help to treat disorders like seizures in children, Parkinson's disease, brain cancer, and autism.

What is benefit of ketogenic diet?

Benefit of ketogenic diet are as follow:

1. Weight loss:

Those who want quick weight loss can rely on ketosis.

2. Useful for type 2 diabetes:

Ketosis may cause a short-term reduction in blood sugar levels for type 2 diabetic patients. Because when you stop eating a lot of carbs. So, the body reduces the number of blood glucose or sugar. This could eventually lead to the body no longer needing as much insulin as before. In type 2 diabetes person should ditch saturated fats and go for fats good for health.

3. Lower the risk of heart disease:

Ketosis can also reduce the number of triglycerides in the bloodstream. It lowers the risk of heart disease. A low-carb diet makes a person eat fewer high-carb foods which means get less fructose. If the body reduces the fructose intake then it decreases the number of triglycerides.

It also plays an important role in

4. Reduce abdominal fat

5. BHB ketones may decrease

6. Decrease the risk of chronic diseases

7. Reduce neurological inflammation

8. Decrease depression and anxiety

Before starting ketosis people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes need medical supervision. The same goes for pregnant women, high blood pressure patients, and or gastric bypass surgery patients.

Side effect ketosis:

There are several Negative effect of ketosis that indicate the body is already in ketosis for example:

  • A person might sense a metallic taste
  • Feel thirstier than usual
  • Urinate more each day
  • Bad breath
  • Fatigue but this usually just happens during the first few days of weeks of ketosis
  • Insomnia
  • Constipation
  • Digestion issues
  • Good signs of ketosis include the
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased appetite
  • Feel more energized
  • More focused

If a person experiences severe and prolonged dehydration, breathing difficulties, or fatigue as he follows the keto diet. Then he should seek emergency medical treatment. He needs to manage his blood sugar levels through a slow and steady provision of insulin.

How to get into ketosis in 24 hours? Or How many g of carbs for ketosis ?

First, a person needs to reduce his daily carb intake to just 20 grams. Try not to consume too much protein and having excess protein could accelerate glucose production in the body and affect ketosis. So, a person should not eat a protein of more than 1.5 grams. For every kilo eat a maximum of 120 grams of protein each day and make keto-friendly snacks instead of eating the usual white bread or chocolate bar. So, he exercises a lot, consumes more fat, and drinks lots of water.

Within eight hours eat only two meals and consume only water for the remaining day. So, hours in other words try intermittent fasting. Usually, this means skipping breakfast and lastly ensuring that get enough sleep around eight hours each day. In some people, ketosis starts in a week while in others mild ketosis starts within half a day. In other words, Ketosis depends on these factors:

  • Exercise
  • Diet
  • Current body composition

How long does it take to go into ketosis?

It usually takes just two to three days for the body to get into a state of ketosis because the body stores for 2 days glucose.

Keto food list for beginners:

Healthy foods that are involved in a keto diet are:

  • Avocado
  • Salmon
  • Eggs
  • Broccoli
  • Seeds

What is optimal ketone level on Ketosis calculator ?

The optimal ketone level for ketosis is different for different individuals. If it shows a range between 1.5 and 3.0 mmol/l, a ketone level in this range means that a person should efficiently lose weight and develop his physical health or improve focus. And when it goes above 3.0 mmol it's probably due to exercise or fasting but this increase in ketone level has no proven benefits.

If it is 10.0 mmol then it indicates ketoacidosis and needs medical treatment So, don't let a ketone level be lower than 1.5 mmol/l or slightly higher than 3.0 mmol/l.

Which is the best test for detection of ketone?

A person can also measure his ketone to check the state of ketosis in three ways:

  1. Blood ketone meter
  2. Breath ketone meter
  3. Urine ketone meter

1. Blood ketone meter:

The first method requires a blood ketone meter which is specifically designed to count the ketones in the blood. Using the blood ketone meter is the most accurate way to check ketone levels. If a person gets between 0.5 and 1.0 millimoles per liter he has mild ketosis.

A measurement between 1.0 and 1.5 mmol/l indicates moderate ketosis. And finally, 1.5 to 3.0 mmol/l is the range for deep ketosis and going over 3.0 mmol/l does not mean a person is in a better state of ketosis.

2. Breath ketone meter:

Use a ketone breath meter to check ketone levels. It measures the amount of acetone and an increase in acetone levels means that burning more ketone bodies. Thus breathe into the breath meter and wait for the results to appear in a few seconds. The result isn't as accurate as a blood ketone meter. It shows color-coded results that signify different ranges in ketone levels.

3. Urine ketone meter:

The last method of measuring ketone levels is through the use of ketone strips. It is just like the second method. It will show a change in color. A darker color or shade usually means that the person is already in deep ketosis. However, using urine ketone strips is the most affordable way to measure ketone levels.

Summary:

All in all ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body relies more on ketone bodies than glucose for energy. It’s a state that a person can achieve for a long period by following the keto diet. There are many good and bad symptoms of this. Ketosis is not just about weight loss it has benefits for physical and mental health. A person should aim for nutritional or optimal ketone level rather than increasing ketone levels to the point of developing ketoacidosis.
