Recheck blood sugar 15 minutes after eating. If your blood sugar hasn't gone up enough eat again and continue these steps until your blood sugar is up over 70 again.
- Eat meals and snacks on a regular schedule.
- Take medications as prescribed.
- If blood sugar is high and in this condition taking too much insulin or an extra pill is dangerous and could lead to hypoglycemia.
- Check sugar regularly before and after vigorous exercise. It can help in catching a low sugar level before it becomes an emergency.
Treatment for reactive hypoglycemia:
Follow these steps for the treatment for low blood sugar in non diabetics.
- Carbohydrates glucose gel or tabs to be chew for better absorption.
- Avoid having anything with chocolate nuts or higher-fat dairy because fat and proteins slow the digestion of the carbohydrates into sugar so blood sugar won't rise fast enough. So, remember it can take 15 minutes for the carbohydrates to raise sugar and try to stay calm and not overeat.
- When you are unresponsive because of low sugar there is an emergency medication called glucagon that can be injected. And its primary function is to break down stored glucose in the body. So glucose can enter your bloodstream and bring your blood sugar up.
- Eat a small snack to prevent low level.
- Include fast-acting carbohydrates in diet, including ½ cup or 4 ounces of regular soda not a diet, ½ cup or four ounces of fruit juice, 1 cup or 8 ounces of skim milk, and hard candies.
- Eat fiber rich diet such as fruits, whole drain and vegetables.
